Esteeming all previous Brett’s pearls we suggest getting back to nowadays to observe poetical crotchets of The Tears songs.
Being changed in mood Brett’s lyrics are still blessed for various interpretations and retain all the ambiguity of early Suede days.
In case with The Tears lyrics which explanations mostly transform into almost free interpretations, we decided to refuse alphabetical order. It’s demanded by the stories behind the songs as we see them.=)

THE GHOST OF YOU
(song title from The Tears first album. See Synthetic Words section)
Before we take and break the song itself we’d like to remind (and educate those who still don’t know at all) where The Tears name’s come from. It’s come from Philip Larkin poem “Femmes Damnees”narrating the story of two lesbians – one cried bitter tears because the second had left her (died or moved away). And that first lesbian was crying up until she’s inspired Brett for new brand…as he said himself.
Could he, in fact, remain us into ignorance to meditate why in the hell did they proceed humidity – being extremely glad or what?=))
And Brettie not only educated us about that beautiful poem, he also wrote a song (very charming and heartbreaking, one can’t help noticing it), keep (or stole, as you prefer it-)) all associations, images and even details of entourage from “Femmes Damnees”.
And if he himself supplied us with this value prompting and not being deaf and blind we quickly understood who is that Ghost of You which never leaves song character alone and fills up his mind though character had gathered all his guitars and put them outdoor … ohhh, sorry, had packed the clothes in black bin back and given it to Salvation Army in order not to remind himself about the dearest but lost one-))

We’re different colours but we stand up as one
(a line from song ‘Lovers’. See Synthetic Words section)
Knowing some details of Brett’s personal life one might ghastly think (well, we didn’t avoid it, too), that this jolly song’s dedicated to any dark-skinned babe, who’s duties are both to warm the bed of our poet and to please his masculine ambitions as long as he’s physiologically male. (He pleased his feminine ambitions in a very different company under less trivial circumstances).
It was easy to get persuaded if remember that “to be different colours” means not only different colours but also “to be quite different”. As for the phrase “stand up as one” God knows what you could imagine about it being out of the swim that it’s just “to stand on an eminence".
In that concrete case it’s obvious for us that this eminence is a stage on which Brett now practises to stay exclusively in Bernard’s company to become “as one” in spite of all their differences).
By the way you also may hear about it in 'Co-star' (See Synthetic Words section): "like ice on the sun we'll melt into one".
Note: If you remember famous picture of younger BB&BA where one wears red and another is in blue then different colours are not scary at all) Just think of purple The Tears logo. Evidently our two-coloured personages have poured their red and blue into purple to really stand up as one.)

Your teeth are not quite straight, Your mood swings oscillate,
Your language is appalling
(a line from song ‘Imperfection’ from first The Tears album)
Doesn’t it resemble someone?) Personally we got strong associations with Bernard who’s known for his jumping mood, not quite straight teeth and lovely gift for that very appalling language) Yeah, agreed, he’s far from perfection and elegance (My defective star, My inelegant love), but is so charming in his imperfection that neither we, nor song character could resist it. Who’s this song character? We suspect Brett himself)
The line You always put your hands in my pockets might seem confusing:
what Bernard’s hands could do in Brett’s pockets? Hmm, what about Bernard’s well-known money concern? Complaining about lack of millions he often may pester richer Brett with “oh, give me some until we sum our profits, kids need food and I want a beer”)

BEAUTIFUL PAIN
(song title from first The Tears album)
Our excessively rised imagination whispers that described situation is logically caused by the line “You always put your hands in my pockets”, which we see in ' Imperfection'.
Does lyrics character of the 'Вeautiful Pain' hide from his hard partner into wardrobe because that ‘hard as a rain” one strongly is fond of finding we don’t daresay what? And tends to fell in character’s pockets forcing him to save himself in that very wardrobe?) And it’s interesting why later this character found himself fallen down to pillow clutching at his wrists (And I cling to my pillow,
and scratch at my veins), exhausted with suspicious killing kisses (You kiss like a killer)?
Yes, to be honest such a colourfully described scenes make associations with something out of proprieties, something… kind of gay-sm)
Sorry, Brett, we did understand you perversely again! And hide yourself better next time!)

Like Apollo, like Apollo we'll fly to the moon
(a line from song 'Apollo 13' from first The Tears album)
Well, "It's a song about doomed relationships..." – with these words Brett introduced the song at the first The Tears gig last year not having remained us any doubts about the whole thing)
And after Bernard being a bit mad because of that relationships said his famous “Fly me to the moon and no return...” we could make sure that this “moon” isn’t so innocent as it seems. Even in spite of another girl hanging around the lyrics… although everyone who got common sense (or vice versa got rid of it to please his imagination and perversions) knows very well the worth of all Brett’s “she” and “girl”)
Well, those who search always find. We did …but we won't have the heart to say what this trip to the moon could mean...
We only dare to quote slang dictionary:
“to fly to the moon, to take a trip to the moon”:
1. to lick or suck the anus
2. usually as a prelude to ****ing, to lubricate with saliva the anus.
3. to widen the opening of the anus with the tongue
4. to **** in anal intercourse.
Therefore passionate promise to follow to the unknown once being called and assurance that “like Apollo 13 we'll explode” are not taken as fever talk anymore. So…and what such a romantic ballad'Apollo 13' is about?)
Note: As for image of Apollo 13, you might content yourself with trivial explanation of "phallic symbol" ). Add here curious fact: NASA got a decision to equip another Apollo for flying to the Moon… on conditions that there would be representatives of sexual minority in the crew. Now our unhealthy imagination is ready to draw pictures of space sexual oddity which no any Star Wars could compare with)
But to please eternally alive aesthetic that continues to accompany Brett’n’Bernard’s creation we’re beautifully going to correlate Apollo with Greek god patronising poets, musicians... and young Hyacinth)

Moreover, we got to know that Mr. Butler prefers Caravaggio – Italian artist who painted ancient gods and other beautiful boys.
Bernard’s sympathy is probably caused not only by artist’s inclinations but also by musical theme of his paintings ("i want to see the caravaggio thing because i think there’s lots of music in there").
Didn’t our maestro mean Caravaggio’s canvas called... “Apollo”))
